Sleep better feel better: Improv your sleep with CBT
Dr. Ross Levin Dr. Levin specializes in CBT-I (cognitive-behavior therapy – insomnia) which has been empirically demonstrated to be the most effective clinical management tool for anxiety-based insomnia. Briefly put, CBT-I is a systematic analysis of the thinking processes which often operate under the radar and contribute to significant anxiety (“If I don’t sleep well tonight my whole life will be ruined”), often outside of the patient’s awareness. Patients are trained thru a process of careful self-monitoring to become aware of these thoughts and the triggers that set them in motion. Dr. Levin also incorporates key components of behavioral sleep medicine (stimulus control, sleep restriction, sleep hygiene) and utilizes a number of tools to help patients observe but NOT engage their busy racing minds (mindful meditation, moving guided imagery, 16 group progressive muscle relaxation, breathing techniques, etc). In addition, Dr. Levin helps patients (in collaboration with the prescribing physician) to titrate off their sleep medications so that these results are achieved without drugs, a treatment goal for many individuals. While results vary, most patients without significant mitigating factors (eg, severe depression, recent trauma) demonstrate significant improvements within 5-10 sessions and studies indicate that these gains continue and strengthen with time, even after the termination of treatment. Dr. Ross Levin is a behavioral sleep specialist and Cognitive Behavior therapist in independent practice in New York City with a specialty in stress management and treating insomnia, disturbed dreaming and anxiety disorders. Dr. Levin earned his doctoral degree in clinical psychology in 1987 from the State University of New York at Buffalo and was a university professor for over 20 years.
