It has been shown that becoming more stress-hardy can lead to better health. The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program is an eight-week course developed at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center by Jon Kabat-Zinn over 25 years ago. MBSR integrates mindfulness meditation (moment-to-moment, nonjudgmental awareness) with a profound level of inquiry into its relevance to daily life. MBSR training can bring changes in physical and psychological symptoms, greater energy, improved self-esteem, and increased ability to cope with pain and stress. The course includes gentle yoga, group dialogue, and daily practice support materials to help deal with stress, chronic illness, or pain. The Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan is proud to be able to offer both evening and morning classes, with an optional full-day class included and open to both sections.
Our MBSR teacher, Elaine Retholtz, has been certified as an MBSR teacher and teacher trainer by the Center for Mindfulness at the UMass Medical Center. Elaine is on the Guiding Teacher's Council of the New York Insight Meditation Center, She is a graduate of the Spirit Rock Community Dharma Leaders Program. In addition to her teaching, Elaine works as an acupuncturist in private practice, integrating mindfulness into all of her encounters with clients.
So that you can keep up your skills, Makom also offers a monthly MBSR graduate refresher class. One Sunday afternoon each month, teachers from the local MBSR teachers' collaborative group offers these refresher classes.
