"The deepest wisdom man can attain is to know that his destiny is to aid, to serve."
- Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel
The UJA-Federation of New York's Engage Jewish Service Corps at JCC Manhattan empowers Jews in their 50s, 60s, and beyond to address the needs of the Jewish community of New York City. Volunteers can use their life-long skill-sets, expertise, passion, and leadership to learn about and address issues including poverty, hunger, joblessness, and the needs of caregivers, isolated elderly, and people with special needs. Volunteers choose opportunities that fit their interests and availability or create opportunities of their own.
Participants also join together in regular community-building gatherings that will include discussion, reflection, and analysis, which provide an opportunity to learn about related societal issues and teachings, and that facilitate connections between the volunteering, learning, and overall life experiences.
