NEW! Intelligent Fitness Is for Everyone: Sharing the 52 Moves of Nia, Train to teach
Caroline Kohles, Kevin VerEecke, Jayne Mielo, Nia New York Training Faculty Make a difference in the lives of seniors while also caring for yourself. This program, a partnership between Engage and the Nia Technique, teaches you how full-body movement improves your own health and fitness and then trains you to share the knowledge with homebound seniors or residents of assisted-living facilities. The Nia Technique is an intelligent fitness practice that blends the movements of dance, martial arts, and healing arts. The moves are simple and adaptable to people of all ages, sizes, and abilities. Included is a free Nia class at the JCC every week and participation in the monthly Nia jam. Engage will help find you a volunteer position in a senior facility and mentor you as you begin to teach. For more information contact Rabbi Brian Fink, Director of Engage, at 646.505.4408 or bfink@jccmanhattan.org or Caroline Kohles, Senior Director of Health and Wellness Programming, at 646.505.4406 or ckohles@jccmanhattan.org (more)REGISTER

Memoir Writing: Mining Your Memory, Engaging Your Imagination
How has my past influenced my choices today, including my decision to volunteer alongside like-minded peers for the good of our community? How are these new experiences changing me? In this memoir and creative writing workshop, participants will be guided to reflect upon their personal stories as well as on their perspectives and experiences as Engage volunteers through hands-on writing. Each of the four sessions will include a contemplative exercise to clear the mind, writing from suggested prompts, discussion and sharing. Prompts may include suggesting ideas, using a photo or other object to jog the memory, and/or questions that direct participants to write reflectively, retelling their Engage (and related) stories in meaningful ways. Rules of positive feedback and confidentiality will be upheld to assure an environment of trust. Participating in each of the four sessions will allow participants to progress at their own pace, while helping to build a community of Engage writers. Let’s face it; it can be more fun and productive to write in a group! Hand-out materials will be made available for those who need to miss a session. The instructor will offer written comments on work submitted or written in class. For more information, please contact Rabbi Brian Fink, Director of Engage, at 646.505.4408 or bfink@jccmanhattan.org. Serve Lunch at Project ORE
Help serve lunch at the Project ORE kosher soup kitchen in the East Village. Project ORE has served more than 400,000 emergency kosher meals and provided counseling, case management, and other supportive services to isolated, poor, homeless, mentally ill, elderly Jews—including Holocaust survivors—since 1987. Many clients have been kosher-observant their entire lives. Without Project ORE, they would have to choose between going hungry or eating food that violates their spiritual beliefs. Project ORE is able to help where other community service providers or government support cannot. For more information and to register, please contact Rabbi Brian Fink, Director of Engage, at 646.505.4408 or bfink@jccmanhattan.org.
