Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Becoming more ‘stress-hardy’ can lead to better life-long health. The MBSR program, developed at the University of Massachusetts Medical center by Jon Kabat-Zinn, integrates mindfulness meditation (moment-to-moment, non-judgmental awareness) with a profound level of inquiry into its relevance to daily life. MBSR can bring changes in physical and psychological symptoms, greater energy, improved self-esteem, and increased ability to cope with pain and stress. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Are you dealing with stress, chronic illness or pain? This 8-week course includes instruction in a variety of formal mindfulness practices, gentle stretching and yoga, group dialogue and inquiry, and support for integrating mindful awareness into daily life. Modeled after the renowned program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts over 30 years ago, MBSR can bring you lasting changes in physical and psychological symptoms, greater energy, improved self-esteem and increased ability to cope with pain and stress. Attendance is required at one of the orientation sessions. With Elaine Retholtz, MBSR teacher and acupuncturist in private practice. Elaine Retholtz has been practicing mindfulness meditation since 1988. She completed the internship in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, and the Teacher Development Intensive at the Center for Mindfulness in Worcester Massachusetts. She is also a graduate of the Spirit Rock Community Dharma Leaders Program. Elaine has been teaching the traditional 8 week MBSR program at the Jewish Community Center in Manhattan since 2005. She also teaches MBSR at the Continuum Center for Health and Healing and to first year students at the Tri-State College of Acupuncture. She teaches meditation courses at New York Insight Meditation Center, where she is an associate teacher and leads a NYIMC weekly sitting group in Queens.For more information, call 646.505.5726. Pain-Free Yoga: Yoga For Arthritis Treatment for each arthritic joint in the body must be particular and individual, because every joint is different. Drawing on 30 years of anatomical and clinical experience, Dr. Fishman will devise and adapt yoga's many virtues to the joints that bother you. Dr. Fishman will meet and review with each participant their individual challenges and concerns on the first meeting.
