An Event in Honor of Rabbi Jonathan Slater's New Book, A Partner in Holiness: Deepening Mindfulness, Practicing Compassion and Enriching Our Lives through the Wisdom of R. Levi Yitzhak of Berdichev's Kedushat Levi Find inspiration for a satisfying life of spiritual practice through the combination of contemporary mindfulness meditation and classical Hasidic spirituality. Rabbi Jonathan P. Slater, mindfulness meditation instructor at the JCC since 2002 and Co-Director of Programs at the Institute for Jewish Spirituality, has published two volumes of selections from the beloved Hasidic text Kedushat Levi, by R. Levi Yitzhak of Berdichev in translation with commentaries. Through these teachings he opens up the possibility of developing a life of spiritual practice which will wake us up to the wonders of the world, help us nurture a heart of compassion and sustain us in times of trouble. Through conversation with Rabbi Michael Strassfeld, of the Society for the Advancement of Judaism and former instructor in Makom, he will bring some of the key themes of R. Based on the renowned program developed by Jon Kabat–Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, this course will provide you with instruction in mindfulness meditation, gentle yoga, and group dialogue, as well as give you daily practice support materials to help deal with stress, chronic illness, or pain. Please note: There is a mandatory orientation session either Wednesday, Jan 21 at 7pm or Thursday, Jan 22 at 9:30am. If you cannot make either orientation and want to sign up for the class, please let us know. MBSR uses meditation, mindful movement and inquiry as a way of training people to relate differently to stresses in their lives. Originally developed for people with chronic pain, it has expanded to benefit people dealing with the serious illness or simply the day to day pressures and anxieties of modern life. Research over the past 35 years indicates that a majority of people who complete the course report a greater ability to cope more effectively with short and long term stresssful situations; an increased ability to relax; lasting decreases in physical and psychological pain; and, most importantly, a greater energy and enthusiasm for life.
