This award-winning, community-based partnership between the NYU Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Center and The JCC in Manhattan was founded in 2007 with a mission to help improve the lives of those impacted by Parkinson’s. Our fitness classes, support groups, and educational and socialization events are designed to keep those impacted by Parkinson’s and their families active, connected, and empowered to live their best lives now. With a primary focus on dignity, hope, and possibility, this internationally recognized program has grown into a welcoming hub for the Parkinson’s community.

The program is made possible through the support of the Edmond J. Safra Philanthropic Foundation, NYU Langone Medical Center’s Department of Neurology, the NYU School of Medicine, the National Parkinson Foundation, our participants and their families and friends

Our program is designed specifically for the needs of individuals impacted by idiopathic Parkinson’s disease. The Edmond J. Safra Parkinson’s Wellness Program is open to all individuals within the community, regardless of religious affiliation, place of residence, or where one receives medical care.

No, you do not need to be a member of The JCC in Manhattan to participate in the Parkinson’s Wellness Program. However, membership is a great way to enhance your experience and take part in the many activities happening every day at the JCC. We encourage our participants to get connected and be active in this vibrant community hub.

Fitness classes, support groups, and events take place at The JCC in Manhattan located at 334 Amsterdam Avenue at 76th Street on the Upper West Side unless otherwise noted. The NYU Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Center is located at 145 East 32nd Street.

The Edmond J. Safra Parkinson’s Wellness Program is made possible through the generous support of the Edmond J. Safra Philanthropic Foundation and our donors with the goal of providing ongoing, high quality, Parkinson’s educated wellness, and educational opportunities. Our events are free, and our fitness classes and groups range in price from $50-$300 for 8-12 sessions. Pre-registration is required for all classes, groups, and events.

Each fitness class and support group meets once per week for a 10 to 12 weeks season. There are three seasons per year: Winter (January to April), Spring/Summer (May to July), and Fall (October to December).

Due to the very high demand for the program and in an effort to accommodate as many as possible, participants may take a maximum of three fitness classes per season.

The Parkinson’s Wellness Program strives to provide our fitness class participants with an environment that is welcoming and safe, yet physically challenging and appropriate for each individual in a group setting. To achieve this, all participants in Parkinson’s Wellness fitness classes are required to complete an intake interview prior to registration.

Our intake process helps us to better understand and match our participants’ physical abilities and goals to the structure and curriculum of each class. Classes are designed to accommodate participants with similar physical abilities, and each class curriculum requires specific abilities to target specific goals.

Participants in the Parkinson’s Wellness Program must have a diagnosis of idiopathic Parkinson’s disease from a treating neurologist. A doctor’s note confirming diagnosis of idiopathic Parkinson’s disease and physical and cognitive ability is required for participation in all Parkinson’s Wellness fitness classes. Due to safety requirements in a group setting, all participants in our program must be able to walk independently, be able to transfer to from a chair to standing, and be able get up and down from the floor independently.
